The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty is looking for a passionate and experienced communications and media professional. The Communications Director must understand how to distill complex legal information into meaningful and resonant messages for a variety of audiences. The Director must be savvy in managing the complexities of multiple industries and environments, including, but not limited to: legal, nonprofit, public affairs, and policy. Additionally, this individual must understand all communications platforms, such as media relations, social media, and public relations. S/he must be able to provide strategy and counsel to clients and internal teams (including vendors), as well as manage project execution and quality oversight. The Director is responsible for the leadership of the communications team and acts as a liaison to internal teams, executive and board leadership, and clients. This individual should be able to work with little direct supervision, while proactively seeking executive input when the situation warrants it. The Communications Director should be passionate about the organization’s mission and actively look for opportunities to support it through integrated communication efforts. The Director will report to the Executive Director and will supervise a team of 3-5 professionals.
Responsibilities
• Oversee communications strategy for the Becket Fund including public relations, media relations, and digital communications
• Work with media, both proactively and reactively, to fulfill interview requests and effectively position the Becket Fund and its clients positively with influential media
• Act as a spokesperson as appropriate on issues related to Becket Fund or client cases
• Work with the executive team to develop and execute integrated communications strategies
• Works closely with legal team to craft public relations strategy for each case
• Supervise communications team members
• Mentor staff for professionalism, work quality, creativity and service and instill Becket Fund culture
• Provide quality control
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire a team of professionals
• Must have excellent organizational and time management skills
• Six (6) years of communications experience in one or more of the following fields: newsroom producer, journalism, public relations and public affairs experience
• Two (2) years of experience managing other experienced communications professionals
• Public speaking and presentation skills
• Excellent writing and editing skills
• Experience and knowledge with digital communications strategies, as well as hired agency support
• Passion and support for the organization’s mission
• Familiarity with legal principles is a plus
